Digital Video Recorders (DVR or PVR) Explained

What if the kids want to watch a show that is on at the same time as yours? Or you are out and can’t be home to watch your favorite show? And what do you watch when there are 2 shows on that you love? You use a DVR to record one of the shows while you watch the other.

DVR is an acronym for Digital Video Recorder. It is a Digital Set Top Box, with a built in Hard Drive to record to.

A DVR is a unit that you can attach between your current CRT, LCD or Plasma TV and your aerial. The box acts as the tuner (the part that receives the signal for all the digital channels) for your TV set and you use the Digital Set Top Box (DVR) remote to change channels.

A DVR also has a built in hard drive, or in the case of DVR Ready, uses an external USB Hard Drive. It is the digital replacement for the VCR or analogue DVD Recorder. The difference is that the digital TV formatting and quality are maintained.

DVRs are more expensive than the basic set-top box (that doesn't have a hard drive), and you'll pay more for models with two High Definition tuners, but the functionality is far more advanced.

More than one tuner makes it possible to watch and record different channels at the same time. On a twin tuner you can record up to 3 programs and watch a fourth (From two networks) all at the same time.

Added benefits of a DVR is the ease of use to record from the On Screen Electronic Program Guide. This can record one off shows, or a weekly or daily program, up to seven days in advance. You only need to set it once. Your family might forget to record your favorite show; but your DVR never will.

Another plus is the Time Shift, which allows you to Pause live TV. The phone rings or the kids need you, just pause your show and come back to watch from where you left off. You can also rewind and watch a segment again & again.

There’s no need for tapes, it records directly into the box. Once watched, your show is easily deleted or keep as long as you like.
